There are numerous theories as to the origin of the term missionary position.
The most accepted is that it dates from the era of Christian missionaries.
Rumour has it that the holy men tried to repress the unruly sexual practices of the natives
and persuade them that this is the only acceptable sexual position in the eyes of the Lord.
Back home in repressive Victorian England, the position was considered the only one acceptable within marriage.
